Back in the 1950s Jersey was famous for early potatoes and honeymoon breaks. Working class couples from northern Britain flocked to the island by ferry from Weymouth, and the island promoted itself as Britain's south sea island.

Temps passé. Visitors today largely consist of bankers and hedge fund managers flying in from London and other European financial centres to take advantage of the island's tax haven status. The holidaymakers have gone elsewhere, frightened away by high prices and the dominant banking sector.

In mid-March we organised a guided tour of the financial district, joining the dots between tax evasion, fraud and embezzlement, securitised debt, banking secrecy, pollution, climate change, and financial crisis. Speakers from across Europe explained how selected banks have harmed public welfare in developed and developing countries.
