Just to let you know the US FATCA legislation is coming under heavy crictism in Canada for privacy implications regarding "US Person" Canadian citizens from both the Conservatives and NDP. I have seen at the very least NDP MP's Paul Dewar, Megan Leslie, Peter Julian, and Don Davies issue statements in opposition to FATCA. I know also Bob Rae and Elizabeth May who are attending the summit have also issues statements in opposition to US FATCA. I know of several people who have already contacted on of the most prominent civil liberties lawyers(maybe the most prominent) in Canada to discuss a civil rights lawsuit against any Canadian bank to that discloses US information to the US on US Person Canadian Citizens(which Canada under the US Canada tax treaty will not impose penalties on or collect tax on behalf of the US)under the FATCA program.

It would have been nice to see coverage of the moral aspect of taxation, which is the fiscal expression of the relationship between the state and the individual.

The individual has a duty to contribute towards the cost of that which enables civilised society to function, but the rights and duties need to be carefully mapped out.

"Ability to pay" is deficient.
